The College of Health Sciences, Moi University is located in Eldoret town next to and within the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital. It was established as the first College campus of Moi University on 20th September 2011 during the inauguration of the first Principal. The establishment of the College of health Sciences is in line with the Moi university strategic plan of 2005-2015.

The College started as a Faculty of Health Sciences in 1989 and the first cohort of 40 students was admitted in 1990. The College has experienced phenomenal growth from its initial one faculty to a total of four Schools (Schools of Medicine, Public Health, Dentistry and Nursing). It has a student population of about 2,000 with a staff complement of over 500 of whom about 170 are academic staff.

The College offers both undergraduate and postgraduate programs including doctorate degrees.

Mission

The mission of the College of Health Sciences is to become the leading health Sciences institution that produces quality health professionals that will address the health challenges of the 21st century that includes the MDGs. The College further aims at addressing the achievement of vision 2030 in the health sector through training, research and implementation of sustainable health programs. This is within the context of the Moi university mission of preserving, creating, and disseminating knowledge, conservation and development of scientific, technological and cultural heritage through quality teaching and research; the creation of conducive work and learning environment; and working with stakeholders for the betterment of society

 

The College of Health Sciences of Moi University is committed to providing quality education and services that meet the needs of its customers and stakeholders through quality and relevant teaching, research and community service and outreach. The College is committed to a quality work and learning environment that is grounded in intellectual and academic freedom, teamwork, quest for excellence, professionalism, discipline and continuous improvement of its products (programmes/activities) and services so as to achieve client/customer satisfaction. To be able to realise this commitment, the College will continually review its products (programmes/activities) and services to conform to the Quality Management Systems based on the ISO 9001 - 2008 Standards.

 

The total student enrolment now stands at 2000 out of whom 1600 are undergraduates. The students are registered in 6 undergraduate programs (MBChB, BSc Nursing, BSc Environmental Health, BDS, BSc Physiotherapy and BSc Medical Psychology).

There are several masters programs including Master of Philosophy in Medical education, M Sc in Nursing, M Sc in immunology, M Sc in Bioethics, M Med in Child health and Paediatrics, M Med in Internal Medicine, M med Surgery, MMed Reproductive Health, M Med Orthopaedic Surgery and a Master of Public Health. One Doctor of Philosophy program in Medical Education is offered in the Department of Medical Education in the School of Medicine.

The College has modern teaching facilities that support academic programmes: The Learning Resource Centre, the Medical Education Conference Centre, the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital and the AMPATH centre. The upcoming Public Health, Dentistry and Nursing Complex (PDN Complex) is under construction and currently hosts the School of Dentistry.

 

The College of Health Sciences Moi University is headed by a Principal who is supported by the four Deans, a Chief Accountant and Administrative and Technical staff in the various support service departments and sections.
